What to see in Tropea: 7 things not to miss
Historic center perched on the sea, Santa Maria dell'Isola, beaches and sunsets: the practical guide to Tropea written by those who live there.
Tropea is one of the most beautiful villages in Calabria: a historic center overlooking a sheer cliff above the sea, with stone alleyways, noble palaces and a view that changes color at every hour. Here's what not to miss if you have just a few days.
1. The historic center
Stroll unhurriedly through the alleyways, ancient doorways and little squares. The main street is full of shops, ice cream parlors and venues where you can taste local specialties.
2. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola
It's Tropea's postcard: a sanctuary built on top of a rock, reached by a staircase. From up there the view of the coast is among the most photographed in Italy.
3. The Norman Cathedral
In the heart of the historic center, the Cathedral preserves the mark of the Norman era. It's worth a visit for the atmosphere alone.
4. The beaches below the cliff
Clear sand and transparent water right at the foot of the village: you can walk down from the town. There are other beautiful beaches along the coast.
5. The sunset
At sunset the sun descends beyond the horizon and, on clear days, you can see the silhouette of Stromboli. It's better to arrive early to find a good spot.
6. Red onion and Calabrese cuisine
Tropea's red onion is famous throughout the world. Taste it in salad, omelette, jam or on bread, together with 'nduja and chili pepper.
7. The sea: Capo Vaticano and the Aeolian Islands
From Tropea depart boat excursions to Capo Vaticano and the Aeolian Islands: it's the best way to see the Costa degli Dei from the sea.
